Marburg-Biedenkopf District Launches 2026 Social Prize for Volunteers

Marburg-Biedenkopf – Volunteer social commitment in the district will once again be honored in 2026: The Marburg-Biedenkopf District Social Prize is a mark of appreciation and gratitude for those whose actions serve the common good. First awarded in 2018, the prize recognizes individuals and groups making a difference. The District's Department of Family, Youth, and Social Services is accepting nominations for worthy recipients until March 31, 2026. Both individuals and initiatives or organizations may be proposed.

"Volunteer work is a cornerstone of our democratic, social, and vibrant community," emphasized District Administrator Jens Womelsdorf in announcing the call for nominations. He added: "It is a vital factor in addressing the diverse societal challenges we face. My role—and that of the district administration—is to support and honor those who contribute in countless ways at the local level, building the social capital that strengthens our society." Volunteering, he noted, is rooted in solidarity, tolerance, and diversity, embodying the core values of a democratic society.

According to the German Survey on Volunteering (FWS), 36.7% of the population aged 14 and older engaged in volunteer work in 2024—equivalent to roughly 100,000 people in Marburg-Biedenkopf District alone.

Since 1999, the FWS has served as the foundation for reporting on trends in volunteering. Based on responses from over 27,000 participants, it provides a comprehensive snapshot of civil society every five years.

Volunteering is most prevalent among younger age groups, with men and women participating equally. After sports clubs, social welfare—assisting those in need—is the second-largest field of activity. Many also volunteer in culture, religious or church-based work, environmental protection, youth services, or local community initiatives.

The Social Prize aims to highlight this diverse engagement and underscore its value to society. Special recognition will go to those who contribute outside traditional structures like clubs or associations, often working quietly behind the scenes for the greater good.

The prize includes €3,000 in funding, which may be divided among multiple winners. The money must be used to further the social causes supported by the individual or organization. As a personal token of appreciation, the District Administrator will also present a certificate. Following the jury's selection and approval by the District Committee, the awards ceremony will take place in late summer 2026.

Nominations may be submitted by residents of Marburg-Biedenkopf District, as well as by municipalities, churches, organizations, initiatives, and associations based in the area. Where possible, submissions should be sent digitally by email to: [email protected].

Postal nominations are also accepted. The mailing address is:
