Protests erupt in Dhaka after music and PE teacher jobs abruptly scrapped
On August 28, the government introduced assistant teacher positions for music and physical training. However, on November 2, these roles were scrapped following criticisms from Islamist groups. This decision sparked a protest rally in Dhaka city on Thursday. The rally was led by Charon Sanskritik Kendra president Nikhil Das and addressed by other leaders. Political and cultural organisations, including Samajtantrik Chhatra Front and Charon Sanskritic Kendra, gathered to condemn the government's move. Protesters alleged that the interim government bowed to pressure from Islamist groups in cancelling the posts. They also accused the previous Awami League regime of making changes to the syllabus under influence from vested interest groups. The protesters further criticised the government's failure to control mob violence against wage-demanding workers. The protest highlighted the concerns of various organisations regarding the government's decision to abolish music and physical training teacher positions in primary schools. They expressed disappointment in the government's response to both educational policy and labour issues.
