Hanover. A 29-year-old man was killed in a serious traffic accident on the A2 motorway toward Berlin late Sunday evening. According to a statement by Hanover police on Monday, the employee of a roadwork safety company was dismantling a barrier when he was struck by a car that had skidded out of control.

Preliminary findings from traffic accident investigators indicate that a 23-year-old woman from Lehrte was driving her Volkswagen Passat in the left lane at around 11:05 p.m. For reasons still unclear, she lost control of the vehicle, which then fishtailed across all lanes to the right before slamming into a van parked on the hard shoulder. The 29-year-old worker, who was standing next to his vehicle at the time, was crushed between the two cars and died at the scene from his injuries.
The driver and her 24-year-old passenger, also from Lehrte, sustained minor injuries.
Damage to the vehicles involved is estimated at around €35,000. The A2 toward Berlin remained fully closed until 6:50 a.m. for accident investigation and recovery operations.
Police have launched an investigation into negligent homicide.
