Preliminary findings from traffic accident investigators indicate that a 23-year-old woman from Lehrte was driving her Volkswagen Passat in the left lane at around 11:05 p.m. For reasons still unclear, she lost control of the vehicle, which then fishtailed across all lanes to the right before slamming into a van parked on the hard shoulder. The driver and her 24-year-old passenger, also from Lehrte, sustained minor injuries.

Damage to the vehicles involved is estimated at around €35,000. The A2 toward Berlin remained fully closed until 6:50 a.m. for accident investigation and recovery operations.

Police have launched an investigation into negligent homicide.
