Teen driver crashes unlicensed and drunk on rural German road
A late-night crash on State Road L 2601 left a 17-year-old driver injured and the car completely written off. The accident happened between Vacha and Völkershausen just before midnight on May 9, 2026. Authorities found the vehicle overturned in a ditch, but no one was at the scene when they arrived. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 11:45 p.m. The driver, who did not hold a valid licence, had already left the crash site by the time police arrived. Officers later located the teenager near Völkershausen before they reached the village.
A voluntary breath test at the scene showed a blood alcohol level of 0.78 per mille. The driver was then taken to hospital for treatment, where a blood sample was collected. The car, severely damaged in the crash, was declared a total loss. Police in Bad Salzungen have since opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and the events leading up to it.
The driver remains under medical care while authorities examine the circumstances of the crash. The investigation will focus on the role of alcohol and the lack of a valid licence. Further details are expected as the case progresses.
