U.S. Bishops Approve 2029 National Eucharistic Congress as Next Major Faith Gathering
The U.S. bishops have given the green light to the 11th National Eucharistic Congress, set for the summer of 2029. This main event, a key part of the ongoing Eucharistic Revival, will be organised by the National Eucharistic Congress Inc., led by Bishop Andrew H. Cozzens of Crookston, Minnesota.
The 2029 date was strategically chosen to capitalise on the momentum of the Eucharistic Revival and to avoid clashes with other major events. It also sets the stage for the 500th anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 2031. The 'Revival Impact Study' has shown lasting positive effects from previous revivals, including increased reverence for the Eucharist and more youth and family engagement.
The 2024 National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis was a resounding success, attracting over 50,000 people. It featured prominent Catholic speakers, musicians, and diverse liturgical experiences. The 2029 event promises to build on this success, bringing together Catholics from across the nation for a time of unity, fellowship, and spiritual renewal.
The location of the 2029 National Eucharistic Congress is yet to be announced, but will be revealed in the spring of 2023. Bishop Cozzens expressed his gratitude for the bishops' approval, highlighting the unity and spiritual renewal that these congresses bring to the Church. As preparations continue, Catholics across the U.S. eagerly await this significant event in their faith journey.
