Kazakh MP reprimanded for flaunting 4 million tenge at wedding
Over the past weekend, a video from a wedding celebration surfaced online. The footage shows MP Aslan Kairgiliyev pulling stacks of banknotes from his pocket and ostentatiously tossing them into the wedding gift basket one bill at a time, counting the money in full view of the guests. Moments later, the toastmaster announces to the entire hall that the gift amounts to 4 million tenge.
Background
"The video captures the moment I presented a gift on behalf of all our friends. Since I was the groom's best man at the wedding, I was asked to hand over this gift. The money was not mine—it was a collective present from all our friends. I now realize that my actions, particularly counting the cash in public, may have come across as inappropriate. I had no intention of showing off or seeking attention. It was simply an emotional moment of joy at a close friend's wedding. As a citizen, I fully accept the criticism that has been voiced and will ensure nothing like this happens again," the MP explained in a video statement.
"After reviewing the situation, the Ethics Committee decided to issue a formal reprimand to MP Aslan Kairgiliyev. The committee members carefully examined the Instagram footage and reached this decision after considering the input of all participants in the meeting."
The reprimand does not strip the deputy of his mandate or restrict his powers.
