Penang extends quit rent appeal deadline to May 31, 2023

The Penang State Government has extended the appeal period for new quit rent review cases until May 31, 2023. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced the decision during a State Executive Council meeting on April 29, 2023. The move aims to ease the financial burden on landowners adjusting to recent land tax rate changes. The extension follows ongoing efforts to support property owners during the transition. As of April 30, 2023, authorities had received 10,344 appeals or responses related to the new tax assessments. Of these, 4,015 cases have been settled, while 6,329 remain under review.

Landowners will also benefit from a late fee exemption if they pay taxes after the May 31 deadline. This waiver covers penalties for land tax, parcel tax, and temporary block tax. The government has urged affected parties to submit feedback or appeals through official channels, including District Offices or the Land and Mines Office. The measures are designed to help landowners manage the shift to updated tax rates. With over 10,000 cases already logged, the extended deadline and fee waivers provide additional time and financial relief. Officials continue to process appeals while encouraging submissions through designated offices.
